David is a lifelong resident of Aurora County, graduating from Plankinton High School and then attending college at National College of Business in Rapid City. Farmed with his family until he was elected to Sheriff and started January 1987. He is a member of the United Methodist Church and Plankinton Ambulance Association. DARE instructor from 1992-2013. Member of South Dakota Sheriffs' Association, South Dakota Peace Officer's and National Sheriffs' Association. Sheriff Fink and his wife Deb live in Plankinton. Oversees a staff of 3 that covers 713 square miles and a population of 2,710.

Historical note of Aurora County is that J. W. Morgan and his wife Cecil were each Sheriff and held the office from 1927 thru 1940.
