Jim Vlahakis was Elected Sheriff of Yankton County in 2011 and took office January 1, 2012. Sheriff Vlahakis has served in Law Enforcement for the past 33 years. He began his law enforcement career in 1978 as a Patrol Officer with the Norfolk Nebraska Police Department. Sheriff Vlahakis worked a short time for the Yankton Police Department and then over nine years for the Yankton County Sheriff’s Office where he served as the Chief Deputy Sheriff. In 1989 Sheriff Vlahakis began a career with the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation where he served as a Special Agent, Supervisory Special Agent, Assistant Director for field operations and finished his career as Director of DCI retiring in 2008.
From 2008 up until his election as Yankton County Sheriff he served as a Special Assistant Attorney General assisting in the implementation and management of the Statewide 24/7 sobriety program.
Sheriff Vlahakis is a graduate of the National Sheriffs Institute, FBI National Academy 189th session, Law enforcement executive development program and has over 3000 hours of advanced training in all areas of law enforcement. Sheriff Vlahakis attended Mount Mary College and the University of South Dakota.
