Troy Wellman, Sheriff of Moody County, has spent the majority of his life in the community that he serves. Troy grew up on a dairy farm in western Moody County. By the 7th Grade Troy knew that he wanted to be a cop. He finished his high school education at Rutland and then attended the Western Dakota Technical Institutes Law Enforcement program. He graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Law Enforcement. After a job in the Juvenile Services Center in Rapid City Troy got a job with the Moody County Sheriff’s office starting in 1997 where he has continued to serve in a Law Enforcement capacity since. He was elected in 2006 starting his term as Sheriff in 2007 and ran unopposed in his second election.
Currently he has 3 deputies and 4 dispatchers who are full time employees and 2 part time deputies along with 1 part time dispatcher.
