Mike Leidholt took office as Sheriff of Hughes County in January 1995 and has been working in law enforcement for over 37 years. Sheriff Leidholt previously served as a deputy sheriff in Hughes County from 1988-1995 and was a reserve deputy with the county from 1975-1980. Mike was Assistant Police Chief and Police Officer for the City of Fort Pierre from 1980-1988. Sheriff Leidholt graduated from Stanley County High School and then when on to attend the South Dakota School of Mines. Mike is very involved in both his local community and the law enforcement community. He is a member of the Pierre Kiwanis, Faith Lutheran Church, South Dakota Standards and Training Commission, a past-president of the South Dakota Sheriffs’ Association and as president for the National Sheriffs’ Association in 2013 to name a few.
As Sheriff of Hughes County, Mike oversees a staff of 49 employees including five sworn deputy sheriffs and a 168 bed jail. Sheriff Leidholt also operates a 16 bed juvenile services center with 8 secure beds and 8 non-secure beds.
